The Power of One: Why Small Habits Create Big Results

Have you ever noticed how quickly motivation can disappear?

Monday arrives and suddenly everything is going to be different.

This is the week you're finally going to get your act together.

You're going to eat perfectly, exercise every day, drink more water, walk 10,000 steps, get more sleep, meal prep, stop snacking and somehow fit all of this around work, family and everything else life throws at you.

By Thursday, you're exhausted.

Sound familiar?

The problem isn't that you're lazy.

The problem isn't that you don't want it badly enough.

The problem is that you're trying to change too much at once.

After coaching women for more than 25 years, I've learned something important: most women don't need more information. They don't need another diet plan, another set of food rules or another impossible list of things they "should" be doing.

What they need is confidence, momentum and proof that they can stick to something.

One of the things that often surprises new clients when they start working with me is that I don't immediately start talking about diets.

In fact, unless a client specifically asks for help with nutrition, we rarely go there on day one.

That might sound strange coming from a coach, especially when many women come to me because they want to lose weight, tone up or feel more comfortable in their clothes.

But here's why I do it.

Most women are already overwhelmed.

They're juggling careers, partners, children, grandchildren, ageing parents, households and a million responsibilities that pull them in different directions every day.

The last thing they need is me handing them a massive to-do list.

Instead, I focus on helping them build one habit first.

Usually, that habit is strength training.

I want them to get comfortable with the workouts.

I want them to experience success.

I want them to discover that they can show up consistently.

I want them to realise they're capable of far more than they think.

And this is where something interesting happens.

Have you ever heard of the phrase The Power of One?

It's the idea that one small action can create a ripple effect that leads to much bigger changes over time.

I see this play out with my clients every single week.

A woman starts strength training two or three times a week.

Nothing dramatic.

No complete lifestyle overhaul.

Just a commitment to showing up.

A few weeks later, she notices she has more energy.

She feels stronger.

Her confidence starts to grow.

She sleeps a little better.

Then she starts asking questions.

"Should I be eating more protein?"

"What can I do to recover better?"

"How can I get stronger?"

Now she's ready.

Not because I've forced another habit onto her.

Because she's experienced enough success to want the next step.

One habit creates another.

She starts paying more attention to protein because she wants more energy for her workouts.

She begins drinking more water because she notices she feels better when she does.

She becomes more consistent with her sleep because she can see the difference it makes.

She starts walking more because she feels fitter and more capable.

Before long, her whole lifestyle begins to shift.

Not because she changed everything overnight.

Because she changed one thing and built from there.

Research into behaviour change supports this too.

The more changes we try to make at once, the more mental energy is required to maintain them. Psychologists often refer to this as cognitive overload. When we're overwhelmed with decisions, rules and expectations, we're far more likely to give up altogether.

That's why so many women find themselves stuck in the cycle of starting over every Monday.

They begin with the best intentions.

Then life gets busy.

Something slips.

They feel like they've failed.

And before they know it, they're back at square one.

What if the problem isn't a lack of motivation?

What if the problem is simply trying to do too much?

The fitness industry often tells women they need more.

More workouts.

More discipline.

More restrictions.

More willpower.

More rules.

But in my experience, lasting results rarely come from doing more.

They come from doing the right things consistently.

I've never had a client tell me they failed because we introduced habits too slowly.

I've seen plenty struggle because they tried to change everything at once.

The women who achieve the best long-term results are rarely the women doing the most.

They're the women who keep showing up.

They're the women who focus on one thing at a time.

They're the women who build momentum instead of chasing perfection.

That's why my coaching has always been built around progress, not perfection.

One workout.

One habit.

One small win.

Then another.

And another.

So if you're feeling overwhelmed by everything you think you should be doing right now, stop and ask yourself one question:

What's the one thing I could focus on this week?

Not ten things.

Not a complete life overhaul.

Just one.

Because sometimes one small habit is all it takes to start changing everything.
