I Don’t Recognise Myself Anymore

The midlife identity shift nobody really talks about

“I just don’t feel like myself anymore.”

I hear this from midlife women all the time.

And they’re usually not just talking about weight gain.

They’re talking about the woman staring back at them in the mirror.

The lack of energy.

The brain fog.

The confidence that seems to have disappeared somewhere between work, family, stress and hormones.

They’re talking about feeling flat.

Disconnected.

Uncomfortable in their own skin.

And honestly?

It can happen so gradually that one day you suddenly realise you’ve spent months — maybe years — putting yourself last while trying to hold everything else together.

Midlife is a strange stage of life.

At the exact point plot twist many women finally have a little more time for themselves, their body starts changing in ways they don’t fully understand.

The routines that used to work suddenly don’t. The weight doesn’t shift as easily. Sleep becomes unpredictable, Stress hits harder, Energy feels lower.

And because most women have spent years being told that weight loss is simply about “eating less and moving more,” they automatically assume they’re the problem.

But midlife changes your body whether you like it or not.

Hormones shift. Oestrogen declines. Muscle mass naturally decreases with age and less muscle means a slower metabolism, reduced strength, poorer recovery and changes in body shape.

Add poor sleep and chronic stress into the mix, and it’s no wonder so many women feel like they’re fighting an uphill battle.

But this is where I think the fitness industry has failed midlife women badly.

Because instead of helping women understand what’s happening, they’re often told to just:

  • eat less

  • do more cardio

  • cut carbs

  • try another quick fix

  • “get their body back”

So women push harder.

They punish themselves with workouts they hate.

They under-eat.

They jump from plan to plan hoping something finally clicks.

And when it doesn’t work?

They blame themselves.

I see this all the time.

Women who are capable, intelligent and hardworking somehow believing they’ve “lost discipline” — when really they’re just exhausted and trying to use strategies that no longer suit the stage of life they’re in.

The truth is, midlife usually needs a different approach.

Not a more extreme one but a smarter one.

This is why I’m so passionate about strength training for women in midlife.

Not because I think every woman needs to become obsessed with the gym or chase six-pack abs at 50.

But because strength training does something far more important than simply helping women lose weight.

It helps women rebuild trust in their bodies.

It helps preserve and build muscle, which becomes increasingly important as we age, It supports metabolism and bone health. It improves strength, posture, balance and confidence. It can help with body composition, energy and even mood.

And maybe most importantly of all…

It reminds women what their body can do instead of constantly focusing on how it looks.

The women I see doing best in midlife are rarely the women doing the most extreme plans.

They’re usually the women who simplify things.

They lift weights consistently.

They eat enough protein.

They walk more.

They prioritise sleep where they can and they stop expecting overnight results.

Not flashy not dramatic but effective.

Because the goal in midlife shouldn’t just be getting smaller.

It should be feeling strong, capable, confident, healthy enough to enjoy your life.

And if you’re reading this thinking: That’s exactly how I feel…

Please know this

You are not lazy, you are not failing and you are certainly not past it.

You may simply need a different approach than the one you’ve been sold for years.

Midlife doesn’t have to be the chapter where you lose yourself.

In many ways, it can become the chapter where you finally find yourself and where you start putting yourself back on the list.
